Rice of Passage - The Spark
Words by William Ng
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new" - Albert Einstein.
You know the feeling. When you’ve just picked up a hobby and you’re trying it out. It can be origami, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or something exciting like tracking the seasonal movements of the Bogong moth. It doesn’t matter what it is; you like it, and that’s all that counts.
You’re new at it, learning the ropes, its customs and the correct forms. You meet other like-minded advocates of the craft and have an absolute blast. Though, it quickly turns pear shaped when some know-it-all with something to prove slams you for being a noob. Just as your confidence is peaking to take the next step, you get cut down with one devastating blow.
It’s a shit feeling isn’t it?
So why should you do it to others?
We’re all guilty of it at some stage, boisterously voicing a volley of cynical comments about a car. It may be a car parked on the street, a feature in a magazine, a picture posted on a forum or perhaps you only just caught a glimpse of it as it drove by. The colour, the wheels, the kit or even the car itself – if you didn’t like it, you made it known.
