Fedde Le Grand

This man needs no introduction. He’s one of the world’s greatest DJs and he’s in the country, along with a star-studded line-up, playing at Stereosonic. The one and Only Fedde Le Grand takes some time out exclusively for ASM as we ask him the hard questions.

ASM: You’re known for intoxicating video clips. Where does the inspiration come from?
FLG: It can come from anywhere really. We always have a massive brainstorm around the table whenever we start discussing the video. Most of the time the lyrics, of course, will have something to do with the whole concept. In the video for Let Me Be Real you can see me, Mitch Crown (who sings on the track) and some dancers trying to break out of our ‘TV bodies’. This was kind of self explanatory, but cool nonetheless. We always try to make our videos as interesting and as entertaining as possible.

ASM: At what stage did you realise you were successful at what you do?
FLG: I think the first time I realised that it was actually something I could do in the long term was when it became my full time job. When you’re doing something you love and all of a sudden it’s paying the bills, you realise that you might just be able to make it. Then of course Put Your Hands Up For Detroit came out and it was all up from there.

ASM: If you weren’t a DJ, what career path do you think you would have taken?
FLG: Everybody asks me this question and if I’m being perfectly honest, I really don’t have a clue. I’ve been DJing and producing for a really long time and music has always been my life; from listening to it in the early days and learning how it was structured to making my own tracks and playing out. This has always been what I’ve wanted to do so I’ve never really looked at doing anything else.

ASM: Where have you had your best onstage experience?
FLG: Probably the most memorable stage experience was at the Roskilde Festival in 2008. I came on to play and the crowd surged into the arena. There wasn’t enough room and they had to close the tent down for about 45 minutes to get everybody out and make sure there was enough room for people. That was nuts! And of course it was great for me to play at the Sensation White Party in Melbourne last year for NYE. It was a great atmosphere and a real highlight of my Australian tour.

ASM: Are there any gigs you haven’t yet played at?
FLG: There are many. In the Netherlands I would like to be at Lowlands once. Burning Man in the US is another one I really would love to participate in.

ASM: Which recording artists would you like to collaborate with?
FLG: There is quite a list and to name just a few it would be Kanye West, Kylie Minogue, Busta Rhymes, The Beastie Boys and Justin Timberlake. But I would also like to collaborate with Groove Armada or Basement Jaxx and the likes, as I really love what they are doing.

ASM: What cars are in your garage?
FLG: An Audi A3 is what I currently drive. I don’t need that big a car, but I look for comfort and a good sound system to check out my latest productions. Actually I spend more time in airplanes than cars.

ASM: What is the car you really want in there?
FLG: A Spyker!
ASM: What do you think about modified cars?
FLG: I like some extras in a car, but if you mean the extremely modified and pimped cars, I like to see them on TV, they are not really my thing.

ASM: What was your first car?
FLG: Mazda 323.

ASM: Tell us something we don’t know about you.
FLG: I’m an open book. But if you really want to know, I don’t eat fish.
